about

The 1980’s was a time of fresh energy and diversity within the Lexington music scene. For a lot of reasons the city had developed a pioneering spirit where live music, much of it original and innovative, was getting played and listened to in multiple venues around town. The Punk and New Wave movements, which came into being and reached their zenith during the 80’s, along with the emergence of non-commercial, college radio programming, helped to build enthusiastic audiences, that sought out live performances in the city and brought to Lexington a vibrant and viable music scene.

Along side the ‘new’, there remained more traditional forms, like bluegrass, country and blues that continued to attract dedicated audiences, in turn supporting many long-standing bands and regional venues. Additionally, the recording industry in those days was still interested in finding ‘the next big thing’ and several, regional pop/rock bands were signed to major recording labels that offered at least the chance of a large scale success. Though, in most cases, things did not pan out, it helped to create an atmosphere of grander expectations for Lexington's flourishing musical talent.

During this period, and even before, I had been developing my own songwriting style and abilities. I was playing solo piano around town and also working with a band that performed in an easy, jazzy style that blended aspects of folk, blues and pop. We went by the name ’The Max Alley Five’ and featured tight vocal harmonies and quite a number of original songs. Another band very active at the time was ‘The End’, which was a three-piece rock/pop group with a reggie sensibility. They had been working in some of the same venues as MA5 and we had the chance to become friends. It was from these two, very different bands that the talented and diverse musicians who performed with me on this recording were culled. The end result was ‘For Loving You’ recorded at Falk Studios in Louisville in 1989 and engineered by Gary Falk. Enjoy.
